The Independent (May 18, 2023) UK bans animal testing for cosmetics ingredients
No new licenses will be issued for animal testing of chemicals used exclusively as cosmetics ingredients, the UK Government has said. Home secretary Suella Braverman announced the ban on Wednesday, after it recently emerged the UK has been granting licenses for animal testing since 2019 in certain circumstances in line with EU chemicals regulations, despite leaving the bloc.

Researchers at the German Primate Center (DPZ)—Leibniz Institute for Primate Research in Göttingen have now succeeded in genetically manipulating brain organoids quickly and effectively. The procedure requires only a few days instead of the usual several months and can be used for organoids of different primate species. The brain organoids thus enable comparative studies of the function of genes at early stages of brain development in primates and help to better understand neurological diseases.

Google Cloud on Tuesday launched two new AI-powered tools that aim to help biotech and pharmaceutical companies accelerate drug discovery and advance precision medicine. One tool, called the Target and Lead Identification Suite, is designed to help companies predict and understand the structure of proteins, a fundamental part of drug development. Another, the Multiomics Suite, will help researchers ingest, store, analyze and share mass amounts of genomic data.
